Remarks given by Chief Brent Cole:
I feel honored that I’m able to represent my fellow firefighters while making this special presentation.
The SCAFD has seen a lot of changes. People have come and gone in it’s 86 year history. But for the last 30 of those years, one man has stood the test of time.
He has been training and safety officer for the last 14 years. He was president of the Genesee County Association of Fire Chief’s for over 1 ½ years, and while doing so, guided the organization toward decisions that past presidents only brushed under the rug.
We all know there is a code of honor that goes with being a firefighter. When I think of this person, honor is the first word that comes to mind.
There are countless times he has been my counsel during topics of stress, for which I will always be thankful.
I think I can say without reservation, we hope he will hold this award in the same regard as we do for him.
Together, with the rest of the Swartz Creek Area Fire Department, I present this 30 year tribute to Assistant Chief Eric Merriam.

The following remarks were written by past recipient Brian Scott, but presented by Anthony Davis:
Sorry I was unable to be here due to personal issues at home but it was a great honor to help pick out this year’s Firefighter of the Year.  When I first got the envelope with nominations in it I was thinking this will be a piece of cake, pick a person and be done, boy was I wrong! After several text messages, phone calls, and delays on my part a meeting was held.  I told the group it was going to be a couple minutes of their time and be done, wrong again. After looking at all the nominees there was a great selection to choose from and all are very deserving but after talking, yelling, fighting, and finger pointing, we narrowed it down to three. Even more talking, yelling, fighting, and finger pointing we had chosen one. And two hours later, so much for just a couple minutes, it was decided.
When looking at Firefighter of the Year nominee, you look at their run percentage which with this FF has been great. Also, we look at their training percentage which has also been fantastic in the case of this firefighter. But you also look above and beyond that to see what makes them stand out.
This individual does stand out by being a great firefighter, but also is a mentor, leader, asks questions, looking for answers and also getting involved with department activities, such as the Explorers, fire prevention, mentor program and much more. This FF is involved with association functions too numerous to mention. Using the extra training above and beyond what is required to become a better firefighter and a leader.  It is always said being a firefighter that you will have two families, one at home and one at the department. You could say this firefighter is very involved and not because she is sleeping with the assistant chief. It is due to the whole family is involved with the department. I would like to introduce the 2010 firefighter of the year, Karen Merriam

As you will note, this award was named in the memory of Chris Hilden, who received the award in 1988, but later died in the line of duty, November 5, 1989, during a structure fire while operating as an engineer.
